In early 2008, while The 7th Victim was being edited, I wrote the following dedication: For my grandmother, Lily Silverman, 97 at this writing and still climbing the five flights of stairs to her apartment…still refusing to take the elevator. Lily is an inspiration to everyone who’s ever met her, a woman who at 90 stood in front of a New York City bus and refused to move until the driver opened it to let her in. Spunk. Wisdom. And a heart of platinum (apparently, literally). For now, we continue to celebrate your life. But when your time passes, you’ll be immortalized by those who knew you and were touched by your soul. I love you the whole universe. Lily passed yesterday, three days shy of her 104th birthday. Below, from left to right, a photo from one year ago; in 2007, while shooting a seltzer bottle at me (I stayed with the photo despite the risk to my camera); and at 101, with the Proclamation from the Brooklyn Borough President declaring July 4, 2011 Lilian Silverman 101st Birthday Celebration Day. She ate it up. Lily is currently en route to NY, where she will be laid to rest beside her husband, who died suddenly in 1950. We miss her already.
