In exchange paradigms, return is quantified and direct. In giving - TopicsExpress

In exchange paradigms, return is quantified and direct. In giving paradigms, reciprocity exists but it is generalized and not quantified. When something is done for “the other” – for the act of giving – a subtle bond is understood to be created between the two people. And that action is understood to trigger reciprocity. Imagine what happens at scale: social cohesion. So, in this context, it seems the author is suggesting that in giving paradigms the fact that reciprocity is not quantified is an auspicious thing. I suppose by that she is suggesting that in a giving paradigm one does not generally compare himself to others and therefore he doesnt perceive scarcity in the same way that he might in an exchange paradigm.
