In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need - TopicsExpress

In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again. You need milk, not solid food! (Hebrews 5:12) Have you ever been told by your friend to change your attitude, to toughen up or to be more of this and less of that? How did you react? Did you shrug off the comment as irrelevant? Or did you feel hurt and indignant? Or did you accept the correction and try to benefit from it? Only really good friends can say things that are hard to digest and yet do not damage the relationship. Words that bring to light a weakness in us are very hard to accept, but very needed to reach a level of maturity. The Word of God is such a friend. It tells us the truth about ourselves without beating around the bush. And in doing so, it gives correction which eventually brings forth spiritual maturity. The writer of Hebrews acts like an intimate friend and tells his addressees the truth in no uncertain terms: you are so slow in the uptake! You should have reached the level of teachers by now! How does this passage speak to you? Do you need to grow up, like the addressees in the letter of Hebrews? Is it time for you to take responsibility in your church? To be of encouragement to others, instead of always being on the receiving side? Ask God if he will reveal to you through the Holy Spirit what kind of immaturity is still present in you. Be prepared to change and move to the level of the mature. The mature are people who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil (Hebrews 5:14). The word ‘trained’ involves discipline: the discipline to walk consistently in the ways of the Lord which will enable you to understand the will of God. The ability to take correction well is in itself a sign of maturity. It is a discipline that needs to be honed, if you want to be a humble yet stable Christian. Practice this discipline! Be a trained believer who can be of support to other, less mature believers. Read: Hebrews 5:11-14 How does this Bible passage speak to you? Please share your thoughts below!
