In fairness, most of the people who ask me to write things for free, with the exception of Arianna Huffington, aren’t the Man; they’re editors of struggling magazines or sites, or school administrators who are probably telling me the truth about their budgets. The economy is still largely in ruins, thanks to the people who “drive the economy” by doing imaginary things on Wall Street, and there just isn’t much money left to spare for people who do actual things anymore. Writing and doing art and design assets for a publication do involve labor and materials costs. If a publication is offering exposure its good to remind yourself of that. Even so, there are better ways to manage your own exposure than doing work for free that should really be paid for. Dont fall into the exposure trap too much if youre a writer or other creative; you still have bills to pay and mouths to feed.
