In flute making, the up-side to not knowing exactly what youre doing is that your ignorance affords you the courage to try it anyway. ;-) I tried making this huge Low D out of bamboo a few years back. Because I didnt understand the physics well enough and was depending on a program (NAFlutomat**) to calculate hole placement and sizes, the upper three holes jumped up to the next octave (or two?), and I finally ended up filling them in. My resulting bass overtone flute is still something I enjoy showing off though, and I may try another big one later on down the road after Ive learned more about making bass flutes. **NAFlutomat is a great guide for making mid-range flutes and can be found at flutopedia
