In full support of over 1,000 contract workers (المياومين) at Electricité du Liban longing to be full-timers and their legitimate claim to do so. Their protest yesterday was faced with uncalled for violence and repression from police members defending an illegitimate body and an obsolete institution called the Lebanese Parliament. These brilliant lawmakers passed a new draft rent law yesterday under which, rents regulated by the old rent law would increase over six years until they reach 5 percent of the current market value of an apartment. More than 200,000 apartments, mostly in the capital, are estimated to be rented under the old law. Which means that in the coming six years, not only would you be kicked out of your home for not being able to pay the rent, you will also not be receiving your salary if youre a public servant or a teacher, you will also not receive the security of a full-timer if you happen to be involved with Electricité du Liban. If youre a woman, you can add marital rape to these socio-economic injustices. Finally, if you thought you could at least let your children climb the social ladder through private education, guess what, the tuition would have doubled by then.
