In general, I dont get particularly wound up about the lives of celebrities. Theyre not necessarily bad people, I just dont have an emotional investment in them and some seem to make decisions that are strange to me. When I think of Robin Williams passing in the same way I thought of Philip Seymour Hoffmans - tragic loss of talent, probably dont really know what they struggled with personally but also left wondering what could be so bad? But, for thousands a year, something is so bad. Standing in the cold one evening in Kandahar Air Base in 2010, I remember watching Robin Williams deliver his standup routine. I remember thinking it was identical to what Id seen him do on a cable special, but still being grateful that he was standing there 7,000 miles away from home in the same winter air we were. I was on my fourth deployment at that point and going home in less than a month. Mine were relatively easy ones compared to most. But for many of the younger troops who were serving outside the wire or for whom this whole war business was a new event, it really means a lot when little bits of home find their way out to where you are. So, Robin Williams - thank you for being cold out there that night. You may have turned out to be more important than you thought.
