In her last year, Nonnie didnt always know who I was. In fact, during a long trip to the emergency room after she had what we thought was a mild TIA, she told me how helpful I was and asked for my name. When I told her, she smiled sweetly and said, Well! Ill remember that, I have a granddaughter named Elaina We were lucky, despite Alzheimers trying to slowly stealnher away from us, she was always there somewhere. The real question was when she was on a given day. She always knew we were related, just not always how. She never forgot that she had a granddaughter named Elaina, but she would often get confused to see the grown woman where she clearly expected the little girl. On one occasion, when I went to take her to a doctors appointment, she knew me but was surprised that my mom and dad had let me drive all that way by myself. Those were the moments you had to just roll with. SoI told her I had finally turned 16 and gotten my license. :) That was just one of the many instances in which I learned to tailor my response and reaction to when she was. Id like to think that was the best kindness as she deserved what peace of mind anyone could give her. A year ago, I got the call that she was gone. Even though I expected it to come soon, it was still hard to imagine a day that she wasnt part of. Nonnie was a close part of my llife growing up. When I went to see her one last time, to gather her things and pray for her transition to her next journey, I was tearful and yet thankful. And I am thankful still. Thankful that our family was able to spend so much time with her. Thankful that we were able to ensure the last few years of her life were filled with love, laughter and music. Today, much to the delight of my children, I will pull out the Christmas moose that sings as he rocks in his rocking chair, put on some country carols and smile instead at the wonderful memories I have of a lifetime spent WITH my Nonnie rather than be caught in the brief moments without.
