In his book BETWEEN THE WORDS, Dr. Norm Wakefield explains the difference between listening and hearing: Hearing is connected to the physical process by which we receive sounds in our brain. It is an automatic process that occurs without noticeable efforts. Listening, however, is a skill one learns. The skilled listener has developed the ability to separate fact (truth), innuendos, distractions, emotions. We learn to perceive or ignore voices, music and noises.
