In his book Emerald City: An Environmental History of Seattle, Matthew Klingle illuminates some of the ways we got to this polluted point. Our city grew, and industries thrived, by using the Duwamish for transport and as a dumping ground. One devil’s bargain involved the early-1960s rescue of Lake Washington—which was turning toxic from sewage dumping by Seattle and surrounding towns—by funneling the effluent into the Duwamish instead. Great coverage of the Duwamish Rivers history and current efforts towards restoration, in Seattle magazine.
