In his drawings, Willie Young, a self-taught artist from Dallas, - TopicsExpress

In his drawings, Willie Young, a self-taught artist from Dallas, explores the world around him. Pulling inspiration from plants, bones, rock formations, and the landscape, he manipulates his source material until it occupies a space that is rooted in our world, but not completely of it. This results in a beautiful tension between subject and viewer, source and result, the world we see, and the world of his drawings. His thoughtful consideration of negative space, and delicate handling of materials reinforce this tension. His drawings have a strength and delicacy that is all their own and an original presence that cannot be overlooked. For most of his life Young has worked at a barbershop, sweeping up and shining shoes. Between customers he sits on his shoeshine stand, places a board across its arms and draws on whatever paper is at hand. He has worked in this diligent fashion for several decades, resulting in a vast body of work.
