In his latest blog entry, Salleh detailed Malaysia’s history from the days of the Malay Archipelago to its current political state, saying, “the history of the Malays has always been a history of disunity. And that, unfortunately, is still true until today.” He noted, “Bapa Merdeka Tunku Abdul Rahman could not avoid it. Tun Dr Mahathir also could not avoid it (in fact it happened twice during the time of Dr Mahathir). And I doubt Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak can be blamed for this as well”. Pointing out that Mahathir himself was “fond” of blaming a disunited Malay race for the successful invasion of the Portuguese in Melaka in 1511, Salleh observed that disunity continued to plague the Malay race even when the British colonialists decided to form the Malayan Union in 1946. Salleh said that although Umno was born as a result of this move by the British, the Islamists within Umno could not see eye to eye with the others in the party and decided to part ways. “The Islamists in Umno, however, were not too happy with the secular foundation of the party and in 1951 the Islamists left the party to form the Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party (PMIP),” which Salleh said was the PAS we know of today. “Hence the Malays were clearly split six years before Merdeka in 1957” Salleh said adding, “Since then the Malays would never become united under one political ideology.” freemalaysiatoday/category/nation/2014/12/22/mahathir-failed-so-why-would-najib-succeed/
