In his most recent piece at TomDispatch, David Bromwich explores the idea of national exceptionalism from the Athens of Pericles to Lincoln’s America to the present day. He uses history, among other things, to shine a light on claims of national exceptionalism and what to make of them. He ends with this powerful, resonant paragraph: “Unconditional love of our country is the counterpart of unconditional detachment and even hostility toward other countries. None of us is an exception, and no nation is. The sooner we come to live with this truth as a mundane reality without exceptions, the more grateful other nations will be to live in a world that includes us, among others.”
