In his newest book, Triumphs of Experience, Vaillant details the value of warm relationships. A boy’s warm relationship with his mother predicts a successful middle life; his warm relationship with his father predicts a satisfying old age. A successful long-term marriage predicts a happier time as a senior citizen. Valliant sums this up as [after] seventy-five years and twenty million dollars…[we have] a straightforward five-word conclusion: Happiness is love. Full stop. And yet we continue to teach boys to be “tough” and to value autonomy over relationship.
