In his newsletter, Trevor writes about the graffiti in Mexico City: I love art, and I love seeing art in public spaces. Graffiti is a democratizing and radical form of art, and is a form of protest. At least thats how I think of it in an idealized way, sometimes its just teenagers with too much time on their hands. Graffiti may be thought of as a newer form of art/delinquency but people have been painting on walls for thousands of years, and in Mexico there is an especially strong artistic culture around murals, dating back to the 1920s. Around that time, with a new government and low literacy rates, the government wanted a way to transmit messages to the population. Murals were commissioned to spread social and political ideas, and this tradition has continued to today. The art I see in my daily travels may have been commissioned or may be less legal, but I always enjoy seeing new pieces. They may be funny, beautiful or spreading a message, no matter what I enjoy seeing a new piece of art. These are some of my favorites so far:
