In his speech to students at today’s graduation ceremony at ECOM - TopicsExpress

In his speech to students at today’s graduation ceremony at ECOM Secondary, Mr Norman Sike identified 4 critical areas affecting Education in manus: 1) Continuing blanket poor academic performances and results in secondary schools. 2) Narrowing window of opportunity for graduating students because of tough competition 3) Poor to nonexistent selection of students to tertiary institutions, particularly universities. 4) Unfavorable human resource equation in Manus. He said currently we have a negative net gain because more elite Manusians were either retiring or dying and not enough students are progressing to universities to replace them. Mr Sike then offered solutions to address these problems by suggesting among others that: 1) There needs to be political interest and leadership in the province to take the lead in addressing educational issues. 2) Manus province must have its own tertiary institution as soon as possible. 3) The provincial government must adopt a “NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND POLICY” meaning, it must be responsible for every grade 12 leavers every year. We need to plan and make smart business investments to sustain the cost of education and human resource development into the future.
