In honor of Torture Awareness Month and keeping in mind that we live in a country where, according to the latest survey, 45% of the population believe that torture is “sometimes necessary and acceptable,” TomDispatch has a piece that’s moving indeed -- I might even call it beautiful, if it weren’t for the subject matter. Ariel Dorfman takes up the tale of a man he met 20 years ago, now the subject of the movie The Railway Man, who was tortured in World War II, finally forgave his torturer (who had become a Buddhist monk), but never fully outlived the trauma of the event. From an author who comes from a land, Chile, where torture was once the norm and who went into exile in a land, the United States, where torture became the “law” of the land, a piece that plumbs the depths of a subject that should never be ignored. Don’t miss it. Tom tomdispatch/post/175857/tomgram%3A_ariel_dorfman%2C_a_tale_of_torture_and_forgiveness/
