In honor of my father - passed away 31 years ago today - I sent this to Tim Russert a few years back in responding to his book Wisdom of Our Fathers. I felt compelled to write this after reading his book: ......I remember growing up - - whenever The Star Spangled Banner of God Bless America was being sung you could hear my father singing his heart out. To this day, whenever I hear those songs, I hear my father singing them. ........My father always appreciated what people did for him - - he would always say thank you, I appreciate it. My father had a stroke at 52 years old and he dies at 56 years old. Near the end of his life he was having what they called mini-strokes. He was having the mini-strokes more often and this one time he cried and said as tears came down his face. Will my grandchildren remember me? At that time there were four grandchildren: Bryan 7, Mark 5, David 4 and Tracy 2. There are now 8 grandchildren: Brittany and Brad 24, Savannah 14 and Haley 13 and 6 great-children: Briana 9, Tess 6, Ciara 6, Brady 5, Jordan 5 and Teegan 5. The twins always asked my mother about Grampa and she told him all about him. She would tell Brad what a big Yankee fan he was. When Brad played baseball since he was 7 years old and still does. After one of his games that he pitched in Little League, he came off the field at the end of the game and came up to me and said: Do you think Grampa would be proud of me? Here he was thinking about his grandfather who he had never met, but knew all about him through talking with my mother. When I visit my fathers grave I always say: Dad, your grandchildren remember you, even the ones you never knew.
