In honor of the Childhood in Global Perspective class that Im going to start teaching next week Im posting these two photos of young Dave. Well, it was pretty consistently David back then. The first one, which Charity absolutely adores, is me at about 18 months old in a classic innocence pose. The second is the photo that was cropped, blown up to poster size, and then hung up in the main hallway of my high school where it stayed for at least two years to my constant humiliation. The reason Im posting them now is that even though I try to understand the experiences of children all over the world, I can never escape the fact that the primary tools I have for understanding other children unavoidably come from my own life.
