In honor of the referendum—one of the most beautiful political protest songs ever written, “Parcels of Rogues in a Nation,” makes the claim that the fix was in as early as 1707, when the Scottish parliament, under the spell of English gold allegedly, voted to dissolve itself and unite with England and Wales. The lyrics are often attrib. to Robert Burns, though he never took credit for them, perhaps b/c he had a civil service job he cdn’t afford to lose. Steeleye Span’s version anglicizes the lyrics* a bit, but the harmonies are gorgeous.
