In just this current year, there have been around 10 conflicts in the continent of Africa which have been noted by the United Nations Security Council. These are all death inducing and productivity stunting civil wars which we, as South Africans (SA) and leaders of the African Union (AU), should have a hand at alleviating and curbing if we are to maintain our position of leadership in the continent. These are most of the conflicts that have occurred this year: - South Sudanese Civil War - Battle of Tripoli Airport - Central African Republic conflict (2012–present) - Central African Republic conflict under the Djotodia administration - Post-civil war violence in Libya - Libyan Civil War of 2014 - Islamist insurgency in Nigeria - Northern Mali conflict - Somali Civil War - Sudan–SRF conflict This means that there is an average of 1,1 civil wars in Africa every month. What has the SA Department of Defence and Military Veterans done to indicate their leadership in this situation? Warfare has transformed over the years and has required those in leadership positions to act accordingly upon the onset of conflict as their lack thereof equates to negligence which leads to dangers for the innocent. South Africas Implementation of the Geneva Conventions Act No. 8 of 2012, Chapter 3 - Jurisdiction and Status, Section 7 - Jurisdiction, subsection 1, compels our defence force to act at the advent of occurrences outside our country: 1)Any court in the Republic may try a person for any offence under this Act in the same manner as if the offence had been committed in the area of jurisdiction of that court, notwithstanding that the act or omission to which the charge relates was committed outside the Republic. In order for us to prevent unnecessary collateral damages to our defence forces, we have to be able to act swiftly and timely whenever there are conflicts that affect the African Union (AU). David Maynier, Shadow Deputy Minister of State Security, raises questions about whether or not the Department of Defence and Military Veterans is using the military resources available to them optimally and efficiently: da.org.za/2014/09/ags-investigation-lindiwe-sisulus-gulfstream-jet-flights-obstructed-dod/
