In just three weeks 72 of the finest high school football players from New Hampshire and Vermont will take the field at Castleton State College to begin practice for the 61st Annual Maple Sugar Bowl. Double sessions will be the order of the day until the two teams move here for the BIG game on August 2nd at Dartmouth College’s Memorial Field The players are on their own to prepare physically for the double sessions and have been told by head coaches David Jackson of Merrimack Valley High School and Mike Williams from BFA-Fairfax to report in shape and ready to go. On Sunday, July 27 the players will visit the Shrine Hospital for Children in Springfield, Mass. and there in the smile of a small child, they will learn the real meaning of Shrine football. Then it will be back to the practice field until the two teams take the field on August 2nd for the bowl game itself The Shrine Maple Sugar Bowl, like 30 other Shrine games across the country, is played for the benefit of the Shrine Hospitals for Children. In its first 60 years, the Maple Sugar Bowl has raised over four million for the Shrine cause. On game day there will also be the usual spectacular pre game parade through the streets of Hanover at12 noon featuring over 2,000 marchers and featuring units from nine Shrine centers throughout the northeast. The halftime show will feature an all star high school band made up of over 100 musicians from some 30 high schools in NH and VT. Kick-off for the football game will be at 5:30 p.m. and tickets are on sale now throughout the two states and are available through the Shrine Football office in Lebanon, NH (603 - 448 - 1042). Tickets can also be purchased by visiting the Game’s website at shrinemaplesugarbowl. The three Shrine centers of NH and VT, Bektash of Concord; Mt. Sinai of Montpelier and Cairo of Rutland, are the sponsors the Shrine Maple Sugar Bowl.
