In late July we notified kidney dialysis patients and their families that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration had issued a Class 1 recall of Granuflo and Naturalite dialysis products manufactured by the Fresenius Medical Care Company, the nation’s largest provider of dialysis treatment services and products. Class I recalls are the most serious type issued by the FDA and involve situations in which there is a reasonable probability that use of these products will cause serious adverse health consequences or death. According to the FDA, Granuflo and Naturalyte are alkaline substances used to neutralize acid that builds up in the blood of dialysis patients. Studies have shown that both products can cause the level of bicarbonate in patients’ blood to rise to dangerous levels, a condition that has been shown to cause cardiac arrest, cardiopulmonary arrest, metabolic alkalosis, stroke, low blood pressure and even death. To read more about the dangers associated with Granuflo and Naturalyte follow this link to a New York Times story about Fresenius and the company’s refusal to alert patients to the risks they faced when receiving dialysis treatment: nytimes/2012/06/15/health/fda-investigates-fresenius-for-failure-to-warn-of-risk.html?_r=2& We believe it is important to reissue this warning in light of the fact that Fresenius operates nine dialysis centers in our area: 1340 Belmont Avenue, Youngstown, OH 139 Javit Court, Austintown, OH 257 Boardman-Canfield Rd., Boardman, OH 9174 Market St., North Lima, OH 2100 Millennium Blvd., Cortland, OH 2345 E. Pershing St., Salem, OH 2425 Garden Way Suite 102, Hermitage, PA 207 W Laurel Ave., New Castle, PA 1407 Woodside Ave., Ellwood City, PA If you or a family member were injured or a family member died shortly after receiving dialysis treatment at one of these Fresenius facilities you may be entitled to a substantial cash award.
