In late June, Summit County passed three ordinances in relation to the proposed Unita Pipeline, which included the protection of wetlands, creeks, ponds, rivers and reservoirs by keeping the pipeline 2,500 feet away from water sources. Tesoro is now suing in response with a lawsuit that claims that the county deprived Tesoro of its constitutional due process. Summit County Attorney, David Brickey responded: We think the ordinances are appropriate and fair and we will defend aggressively the decisions of the Summit County Council. At all levels of citizen-centered governance, communities should get their say in proposed industrial development. But what happens when corporations dont like county decisions? They sue. Bishop spends much of his time calling for smaller federal government, but fully supports corporations who try to supplant and override decisions made by local county governments. I support local communities and their elected representatives to make decisions in best interest of their communities and citizens. There is no small irony in saying you dont want external interference in state politics and then support corporations who try to overturn county law. Its time to stand up and take our state back from vested special interests and career politicians who work in the service of non-citizen centered agendas.
