In lieu of a detailed write up on violence of non-violence ... a very brief note of Gandhis non-violence – While talking in the context of popular violence, Gandhi is know to have said: I object to violence because, when it appears to do good, the good is only temporary; the evil it does is permanent. In a divided society, good or evil is temporary and partial, and neither permanent nor impartial, with or without violence. We may sincerely wish an end to violence, but the issue is not quite as simple as Gandhi would like us think. And we must be able to see that violence is not one-sided. Gandhi was against the violent means of overthrow of power, but not so much, if at all, against the violent means of power. His pacifism was voicing the terms. To call for an end to violence is a call for an end to state power, power structure and an end to condition prevailing between the rulers and the ruled, to the condition of contradiction between the two, and in turn to an end to a divided society.
