In light of last nights earthquake, a few reminders to my fellow Los Angeles theater artists: 1. Make sure all lighting and sound equipment is secured--instruments and speakers should have safety cables. 2. Your front of house staff should know what to do in case of an emergency. Know how to respond calmly. 3. Make sure all emergency exits are marked and follow local and state building codes. 4. Make sure aisles and hallways are always kept clear. It is illegal to put chairs/cushions in aisles or on stairs that will block audience members from exiting safely in an emergency. 5. If your facility doesnt have an emergency lighting system, make sure your front of house and stage management staff have easy access to flashlights with fresh batteries. Safety first!
