In light of recent posts I have read across Facebook, I thought I would share an article that addresses some areas of concern about the Facebook Messenger application, and why these application permissions are not as bad as many believe them to be. For those that feel these changes are an infringement of privacy, there will be little convincing you that these permissions are disclosed to the end user for simple legal purposes of transparency; nevertheless, that is one of the primary purposes for its display, prior to downloading. On another note, for those that feel this is an opportunity to be monitored, we have all been monitored from time to time by the NSA without our knowing it and without giving our permissions. Not downloading this application will not change that fact either. Almost every service provider, regardless of their market, is approached by various governmental offices with a proposal where they can benefit, if they would share some information; and some agree, others object and, if compliance is not achieved, loopholes and strategy are used to reach the goal. To get to my point, accepting these permissions within the Facebook Message app is necessary to enjoy the many capabilities and conveniences that the service provides. Short story, these permissions must be accepted, upon installation, to facilitate basic functions (i.e. sending a photo via messenger to a friend - you must allow the application permission to access your photos before sending it; access to your phone and call log - in order to use direct call feature on Facebook, you must allow it to launch your phone dialer for direct call; do you want to share a special moment or send a video recording to a friend - you must give the application permission to access your microphone first; want to update your status handsfree - you must allow the application to post on your behalf, etc.) Also, bear in mind that activity of any nature - regardless of where conducted (desktop or mobile device) - is mined and tracked via cookies to see impressions and where a user engages on the World Wide Web; geotargeting is nothing new, it has been around for many years now. As Near Field Communications (NFC) become more prominent, too, we will be able to do things with great convenience; however, these conveniences come with potential costs and risks as does anything that we do in this life. Change is never easy and is often faced with much resistance. However, to grow, we must undergo such changes. I think we have a responsibility, though, to view everything throw multiple lenses and try to understand, before rejecting something altogether. Feel free to read this article that can better explain each of these changes: androidcentral/facebook-messenger-permissions-not-scary-stories-might-have-you-believe
