In light of the NYS Assembly fast tracking a bill on Common Core that does NOTHING to address the issues associated with Common Core for our children, we are forming our own PARENTS UNION. Please see my previous post below and send me your email if interested. PARENTS, IT IS TIME TO TAKE BACK THE RIGHT TO DIRECT THE EDUCATION AND UPBRINGING OF OUR CHILDREN! We are officially starting a Parent Coalition in the BH-BL school district with the goal of increasing parent support and feedback in regard to sweeping changes in education that are affecting our children. We will be meeting within the following weeks. If you are interested in joining our group, please send me your email for our mailing list. I encourage all other school districts to do the same. At the last Board meeting, a parent spoke about the fact that no Common Core document mentioned it’s the parent’s right to direct the education of our students. This hit home for me. While not every issue with the direction of education that we discuss here is associated with Common Core, perhaps the scariest issue is the disappearing voice of parent/family in the choice and control of what is in the best interest of our children. The federal government has changed the privacy laws or FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) so that the FAMILY no longer has RIGHTS to PRIVACY. We have the NYS PTA Education Coordinator, Bob Alois supporting calling Child Protective Services on parents who exercise their right to direct the education and upbringing of their children by opting them out of standardized testing, and has threatened charging them with “education neglect.” We have the State Ed forming a committees to develop birth through age 3 learning standards and creating statewide databases to track our children from preschool through the workforce. We have the Attorney General, Eric Holder trying to ban homeschooling. And so much more. It will continue if you let it.
