In light of the news about Robin Williams, These are Davids thoughts on suicide. He has battled suicidal ideation for 35 years. He is not a professional, he has just spent most of his life thinking about this and has dealt with the suicide of loved ones. 1)Suicide is not insane per se and calling it insane stops discussion of the problem. The short answer is that this approach is not helpful. Some cultures encourage or demand suicide. Most people who commit suicide have spent considerable time thinking about it. Most suicidal people do not engage in otherwise insane or bizarre behavior 2) Suicide is usually the result of poor problem solving...suicide prevention should focus on enabling improved problem solving. It represents a different value system or one that has changed. Suicidal people often have some kind of diminished capacity to solve the problem at hand: anxiety, addiction, I have Aspergers. 3) Suicide is a social phenomenon, not a private issue. 4) Suicidal ideation is a suicide fantasy about a quick, easy, understandable way to solve all of your problems. Encourage an alternative fantasy that is more helpful. Hope is a type of fantasy too. 5) Suicide is a terrible way to send a message. Not only is the cost very high, but the friends and family of the suicide person very often lie about what they know of the deceased. Not talking about it is not helpful, it diminishes chance of improvement. 6) What is the problem? It takes the form of: I cant go on with the way things are and I cant make things better. Two things to work on... Is your view of how things are realistic? Do reality checks with someone you trust. Is there really no way to make things better? Many problems can be resolved this way. There are problems with no solutions. But make sure your problem really has no solution.
