In light of the post I made this morning about Andy Crouchs story on Jim Koch and the Boston Beer Company in Boston Magazine, I think its important for a few points of context: 1. Samuel Adams Boston Lager remains a pivotal force in beer in the United States and, more arguably, beyond. Beers such as Pliny and whatever latest historical brew Dogfish Head has come up with change the dialogue about beer, while beers like Sierra Pale and Sam shift the entire paradigm. Which is to say, few people change their tipple from Bud or Coors Light directly to a tart, barrel-aged beer or high-strength IPA, but they do change to a Sam or a Steam or a Sierra Pale. 2. Hardcore craft beer aficionados and, by extension, the bars which cater to them are still a small minority of the beer market, although their influence is vastly disproportional to their number. (At least, it is if you pay attention to what some of the media professes.) 3. There is, to my mind, no one in the United States who has done more for the advancement of craft beer than Jim Koch. Period.
