In lines 475-6 of Sophocles Ajax, Ajax seems to mean that an extension of life does not improve its quality, but the exact sense is obscure and the text is probably corrupt. Jebb supposed a metaphor from moving back the pieces in a game of draughts, while Kameerbeek thinks of a race. It is easy to imagine that the successive days of ones life are bringing one ever nearer to death, or, alternatively, that each day represents a postponement of death. But the combination of the two ideas is difficult, as is the active use of anatihemi and the genitive of separation after it. No convincing emendation has yet been proposed.
