In looking toward attending the USENIX-LISA conference next week - TopicsExpress

In looking toward attending the USENIX-LISA conference next week (which I have been attending nearly every year for a couple of decades now), Im remembering various wonderful moments from past conferences but theres one in particular that is suddenly coming to mind. My finest hour and shining moment at this conference was the year I gave an invited talk called Why the Documentation Sucks, many years ago, on a year the conference was in New Orleans. My talk was at the end of the conference -- when brains are fried and lighter talks are better received. So I invited my parents to come see me give the talk, and then stay on through the following weekend to see New Orleans with me. Which we did -- we went on architecture tours, history tours, ate at local restaurants. It really was a great time. But this is the memory that is making me smile to recall. I wrote the conference organizers at the USENIX organization to ask if I could get some sort of pass for my parents to allow them in to my talk. As it happens, the USENIX staff all knew me, but mostly they were so charmed by the notion of a speakers parents coming that they immediately registered my parents gratis for the entire conference! This was, of course, a bit more than was really necessary, my parents didnt even arrive until the day before my talk, but it was lovely. And then they asked me afterwards if my parents had managed to attend any of the other talks. It was all so sweet. But mostly what was sweet was just how wonderful the organizers were about wanting to make my parents welcome.
