In making the video I went through a vast number of photos and the ones that really touched me were the letters of the alphabet and the one where we are talking at the special olympics. The alphabet - maybe you dont know that story.... Matt was in a first-grade special education class. He was the only autistic child...he hid under tables or paced the back of the room. Teachers and aides didnt feel he was reachable or teachable. He never seemed to pay attention, didnt appear to care about what was going on, never responded to his name. At home in the spring of that first year I noticed Matt dancing in the bright sunlight. He moved so precisely that I knew something was up. Tom and I watched as he did move after move, standing very still each time and glancing over his shoulder. He was looking at his shadow. As he moved my attention went from him to his shadow and there in shadows cast by his body were the letters of the alphabet, one after the other, in the correct order. Matt had to speech - he could recite the alphabet much less sing it . . . so he danced. Can you see which letters he is doing? The other picture at the Special Olympics as he looked at my face while I spoke to him and got him ready to enter his events is also very sweet for me. Matt to this day does not look directly at another person while they speak - not even other family members, but does with me. An intimate conversation that only him I can understand... Can you see his concentration on his face?
