In memory of my Loving Mother - with Love (Part II). Unfortunately for us, the family, darkest hour dawn of us on 27th December, 2011 when our dearest mother left for heavenly abode never to return. I still curse myself for not able to be there by her bed side. Alas! I was far away like an alien in Malaysia attending my training of two weeks long…… My mother has been suffering from high blood pressure since we were in junior high school. However, she always took control of her diet and health despite the suffering. She took her medicine on time..always. Despite her high BP, she was rather healthy. In year 2012 she was in Dagana with my youngest brother who is a teacher. My parents were looking after him since he was still young and single. Nearing the autumn season’s end, my mother started feeling sick started with blurriness in her eye sight, giddiness and numbness in body. So, my father took her to Gelephu hospital for check up. After a week of observation and lots of analysis, she was referred to JDWNRH. However, by then she was half paralyzed and could no longer walk by herself. Since my two elders (brother & sister) are running a small business in Gelephu, they arranged for the transportation and everything. They informed me about her referral to Thimphu out of sudden. As I am working in Phuentsholing, I informed them that I’ll start my journey on the same day direct towards capital. Having reached Thimphu I directly went to hospital, however, they havent arrived. Around 8.15 pm they came. When I consulted with the doctors on duty and informed them of the referral, they told me to admit her in general ward. With help of my colleague, brother and father, we arrange for her bed in the general ward. We were there for only an hour and it started getting difficult for my ailing mother with lots of patients and aids moving around. As such, I requested doctors on duty if they could arrange us a cabin since we are ready to pay whatever the charges. To our dismay, doctors were none co-operative and reluctant even to converse with us. I ran after one doctor to another, but to no avail. I called my friend if he could talk with anyone working in the hospital with authority. My stars must have been bright since he called me back and gave me a contact number of one of the senior lady doctor. I had a conversation with her for minute or two and she agreed to arrange us a cabin. I went with her in search of cabin and found all ordinary cabins occupied. At the further end, there were two cabins with an overhead board mentioning as ‘Deluxe Cabin’ and the other one as ‘VIP cabin’. The later one was only for the VIP only, and the former one was already booked although it was empty. However, I repeatedly requested her to rent us the deluxe one and finally she obliged. I am grateful to her still. With much difficulty we shifted her from ground floor to third floor. My mother being a huge lady, we hardly could lift her and board her on the stretcher bed for the transfer. I surveyed the room and to my dismay there were no spare electrical socket to be found. Winter in Thimphu is terribly chilly. Hot water is a necessity. Mid of November month, the tap water was freezing cold. First week passed and there was still no sign of my mother recovering. She could neither talk nor eat. We children served her with broth, every kind seeking the advice of expert. Whenever she was thirsty, she would point to the mineral water bottles and juices kept beside her bed. I will be the first person to feed her. I knew deep down inside, my father was suffering more than us. His eyes were lifeless and teary all the time. A pipe was inserted through her mouth for feeding and glucose injected via her wrist. Diapers have to be used since she could not go to toilet. I cleaned her body with luke warm water every day, washed her clothes and stayed endless night by her bedside. Watching her suffer day after day broke my heart. All I could do was to watch her suffer and cry inside. I prayed to God and begged the doctors for her swift recovery, but to no avail. I even fought with God inside my heart and lashed at health workers (doctors, brothers & sisters) for their rude way of talking and attitude. It all happened……….. To be continued…………
