In mid-2015, SWPC will stop using the NASA/ACE satellite for geomagnetic storm warnings and begin using the NOAA/DSCOVR satellite. The DSCOVR satellite, expected to be launched in January, will be NOAA’s first foray into interplanetary space and the first NOAA mission with space weather as the primary objective. DSCOVR will ensure we can continue to provide timely, accurate warnings of geomagnetic storms that have the potential to disrupt public infrastructure, such as the electric power grid, telecommunications, aviation and GPS. SWPC will provide access to the real-time data that DSCOVR provides, just as we do for ACE, as soon as the mission becomes operational. While we wait for DSCOVR to launch, check out the DSCOVR mission website put together by our NOAA partner, NESDIS, for details of the mission and the lead-up to launch: nesdis.noaa.gov/DSCOVR/
