In my 30 years working at various weekly short tracks and being a fan in the stands for years before that I saw a lot of wrecks, spins, crashes, a few flips, and a couple of end-over-ends. When two or more drivers were or are involved in an incident, it is difficult for an observer to clearly determine what caused the crash and who, if anybody, was at fault to the point of having to take responsibility. This is no time to be making assumptions about what happened in upstate New York last night when Kevin Ward, Jr., was struck and killed by a sprint car driven by NASCAR champion Tony Stewart. I am somewhat stunned because one of the family members of the Racing Nation is dead in an unthinkable on-track incident. I have seen the video. It is not a pleasant sight. It would be easy for somebody who already has an allegiance to one driver or the other to make a judgment based on that video. The crash and the death are being investigated by the proper authorities. For now, lets let them do their job. Ones heart goes out to the friends and families of Ward and Stewart, but there are many, many more people in the Racing Nation are hurting. Even though they never knew Ward nor have met Stewart. Thats who we are. Thats what we do. WE are the Racing Nation. The final flag has been thrown for Ward and it was not the checkered. God, give us comfort.
