In my Musical Theatre History class at Columbia College Chicago, we study early-20th-century comedian Bert Williams, who in 1910 became the first black star of the Ziegfeld Follies. (When white cast members threatened to quit rather than perform with a black castmate, Ziegfeld told them to go right ahead, pointing out he could replace any of them -- but there was only one Bert Williams.) Prior to joining Ziegfeld, Williams had starred in the landmark all-black Broadway musical In Dahomey. He also appeared in silent films. Now a long-lost 1913 movie starring Williams has been rediscovered and restored, and is being shown at New Yorks Museum of Modern Art.
