In my almost 30 years of teaching, I have had the opportunity to teach many students from all walks of life and also from all age groups; the youngest student Ive ever had was a cute little three-year-old and the most senior was a retired plastic surgeon in his 80s. In between, I also helped coach a visually-impaired boy who was a prodigy of sorts, and currently I have a special student who has ASD (autism spectrum disorder). As I dont have specialized training with autistic students, almost every lesson with this special teenager is a revelation. According to his mother, one day he just sat at the piano and started playing and reading music all on his own without having had a single piano lesson. He could sit there and play away for a whole day! She also observed that playing music, especially jazz piano (now that he is taking lessons from me), makes him really happy as he gets to improvise, play off and away from the score, and essentially create music at the piano! Today, I taught him how to play a Bossa Nova left hand bass pattern consisting of the root and 5th of the chord. Lo and behold, his musical side kicked in and he instinctively played the 3rd and 7th in his right hand as a chord voicing! I didnt even have to show him -- amazing! In order for both him and I to progress on this special musical journey, I have been steadily reading up on research articles on autistic musical savants and also recent studies on individuals with autism who has certain musical abilities but not savant talent! In the meantime, Derek Paravicini will be our inspiration and aspiration... Musical savant or not, lets all Keep Living the Music! ^_^
