In my column in the March edition of Property Australia I talk about the house of the future. Here is a place where both partners work. The house must be functional. A double garage faces the street. Home owners come and go via roller door secure access. The neighbourhood no longer exists. Social validation is gained through work not through the home. The home is a fortress. It is desined for seciurity. Children do not play in the street but in scheduled play-dates with the children of approved and vetted families.. There is no backyard cricket; theres planned after-school indoor cricket practice. No need for a backyard. No-one uses it. There is no incinerator. No clothes line. No vegie patch. Just a barbeque area (includes wok-burner). There are no outward displays of household wealth: secuirty risk! The core of the home is the kitchen where household members graze and chat. There are no formal meals. The Sunday family roast has been replaced by Friday night pho at the local Vietnamese. Cheaper and easier to convene a family get-together outside the home than inside. There is no home office but there are places where work can be done at home. Carpet has retreated to the bedroom. Glass and light has reduced wall space. The kitchen blends with furniture: cup-holders in dads recliner rocker in front of the tele. Get the picture? propertyoz.au/Article/NewsDetail.aspx?p=56&mid=1983
