In my currently medicated state, Ive got on my soap box and heres what I have to say. This is not in specific response to any particular production, but a general note for anyone in the creative/performance industries being asked to work for free. Start the debate, be the change, otherwise nothing will change. Ever. Let me know your thoughts...... If someone is asking/forcing people to work for free, report them, their company etc to Equity/MU or whoever the relevant union is. The sooner performers learn that doing fringe shows for little or no money jeopardises the entire industry and subsequently ruins any leg Equity/MU has to stand on when trying to negotiate better wages for their members. Professional producers will come back to any negotiating table with well theyre working for free here and here, why should we bother giving anyone a pay rise? Theyre obviously so desperate for the work and the credit for their CV theyll do anything If someone asks you to work for free the answer is simple. Say no. Tell your friends to say no. And report them and their company for trying to get people to work for free which is illegal unless volunteering for a charity. I love my profession, and I love what I do. But that is a privilege and one we have to fight to protect. Doing gigs/shows etc for the love makes you a hobbyist. Go do am dram if this is the case. Professional productions run by professional producers are only so if they pay professional wages. Otherwise nothing about their production is professional.
