In my experience, patients resent being put on the spot about how to describe their pain; theyre there in front of you because they want you to find it and then tell them whats wrong. If they understand (and thats the most important thing) they wont necessarily rely totally on you to fix it! They will be much more happy and compliant following a self treatment regime. This is why manual palpation of the spinal segments by experienced hands is the most direct and effective way to make a diagnosis or what structure, at which spinal level, is playing up. Broadly speaking, simple and reversible stiffness of a spinal segment is the most common finding ~ with deeper and more purposeful manual pressure eliciting that familiar pain (with pressure to the problem vertebra it often feels as if the bone itself is bruised). With 90% of patients in this category, this is the most likely to be you. Just as reassuringly, mobilising stiff segments is the best way out of this problem, either by those same experienced hands or by you doing spinal mobilising exercise (including generic decompression) yourself. Most spinal conditions will only stay painfree and keep on getting better by patients doing the treatment ~ either wholly or partially ~ themselves. In my videos section on simplebackpain I have a short clip how you can mobilise your spine yourself, using your own hands (me showing you how on my own back). Granted, its not easy getting your fingers into your own spine but its really quite astonishing how you can affect (yes reduce) the pain ~ by starting to loosen a jammed spinal segment ~ if only you know where to start.
