In my opinion funk really started getting funky when the jazz musicians started tinkering with it in the early 70s, but didnt reach its funkiest until George Clinton took it to outer space and let it float around in zero gravity. Its beginnings were probably with James Brown and then ended up in a very similar persona with Prince towards its end, but having less social constraint. Funks demise lies with the jam bands doing versions of what the jazz musicians were doing much earlier with some different equipment and acting like they made something new. Talk amongst yourselves.
