In my opinion, it is shameful that our County has no animal shelter. There is a pound for the dogs and cats unlucky enough to be caught by animal control within the city limits. This building, from what I understand is small and damp. It doesnt have that many cages, it is not advertised. I have never been there, but I did call our current Parks & Rec. & Animal control Commissioner a few months back about the conditions of the shelter that is there currently. He says that he is looking into ways to improve things there. I mentioned this idea to him. I challenge him, and whoever else is involved with Animal Control, The Tri-State Humane Society, animal Rescue circles, and the Sheriffs Office to look into what I am writing about, if you have read thus far. In 2010 in Gwinnett County Georgia, they started a jail dog program. This helps their county by providing an animal shelter, with no new building required. It serves their entire county. The program saves dogs from Gwinnett County Animal Control, vets and trains them, and offers them for adoption. Our last Sheriff, not to name names... laughed this off, saying it could never be, when I called him on the phone to tell him about it. What if someone filed a lawsuit he said. I think, that it clearly is legal and is proving quite successful in Gwinnett County. Although, that county is the first to do a program like this in a jail. Why cant this happen in Dade County? We can be part of a movement. There are ALOT of animals abandoned outside the city limits. This County needs an animal shelter. The shelter for the city needs major improvements. Turn part of the jail into a place where a small number of animals are helped. Our inmates will have something worthwhile to do, if they want to participate in this section in the jail.. and Id bet, youd have many wanting to do it.
