In my opinion, its important to remember EVERYONE who lost their life in the war between 39 & 45 (with the exception of the members of the Nazi Party, members of the SS, members of the Gestapo, the French Police, Slovakian politicians, Italian politicians, Japanese politicians, Thai politicians, Iraqi politicians, Hungarian politicians, Bulgarian politicians, Romanian politicians... and anyone else who sold out the innocent citizens of their own nations or the refugees of any other nations). A love for ones homeland and people is great, but patriotism is a seriously baffling and dangerous concept. To me, patriotism implies an allegiance to ones government because it is used politically to instill a sense of imperialism among an arbitrary demographic of people known as citizens of a country. I cant even conceive loving or hating someone more or less because they were Canadian than if they were of ANY other nation. I love or hate people based on my own, personal interactions with them. Patriotism is the foundation of war itself, so to remember / celebrate WW2 (or any other war) through acts of patriotism is the epitome of paradox and is a concept that disgusts me past the point of being able to properly explain it. In addition to being used as a political tool to promote imperialism, this same concept is used as a tool to promote hatred towards other arbitrary demographics of people who are just like you and I. People with families and friends who feel pain and emotions the same way we all do. Today, its important to remember everyone. Nearly every nation on Earth took part in it. Remembering the people from only your own country is the exact perspective that will surely spawn another World War eventually.
