In my opinion, the reason that children in Korea are so clever is that they have a desire to learn and a good attitude towards learning, not because they stay at school until 11pm. A large percentage of children in our country know that they dont have to learn, when they leave school the benefit system will support them. They also know that theres no punishment higher than being excluded or expelled, which effectively means sitting at home on their xboxes because their parents cant be bothered to discipline them or quite often take the side of the child over the school in a conflict. Before anyone jumps down my throat, I AM NOT SAYING THIS IS THE CASE FOR EVERY PARENT ON BENEFITS. In fact, I bet its just as common for parents who go out to work. A lot of children in this country take our education system for granted and people who dont work in schools are so quick to blame the school, the teachers or the curriculum for childrens behavioural problems and poor results. All this blame gets thrown around and the child is learning that their parent is turning against the school on their behalf so think that they can turn against the school too and, from that point on, the child sees school as the enemy and then learning becomes the enemy too.
