In my personal opinion, selfies are a symptom of the development of technology and social media. Social media gives you access to way more peoples personal lives than ever before. Because of this we often determine our value the same way a stock market does, constantly comparing ourselves to other individuals in order to form our own value. This tends to create a massive wave of insecurity amongst people since we are comparing ourselves and our lives to these fictitious social media profiles. As a result of this insecurity, we approach these same platforms to receive the validation we require to feel desired and therefore feel valued. We do that by taking a selfie and seeing how many people Like us or approve of us, so that we can synthetically validate our social worth. More people are doing it because of the emergence of technology, but its not because people love themselves, its quite likely the exact opposite.
