In my playwriting class, in addition to the consistently hilarious group character-building exercises (featuring Mayor Stupid of Stupidville, Tulip the garbage man, and the twins Gerald and Giraffe), Ive also been giving the older classes a chance to make up their own characters and take them home to turn into a play of their own. I told them it wasnt mandatory, but that I think writing stories makes us better people, and that it can be a good way of saying something you dont know how to say in real life. At check-in this morning one of the autistic kids in our theatre camp brought me a copy of the play she wrote last night. Its about a girl who is forced to live all alone on a cold, rainy porch until a magical unicorn promises to be her friend forever and carries her off to a castle of her very own that is as shiny as the sun. In seven years of being a professional playwright I have never felt more like what I do makes the world a better place than I did at that moment.
