In my proposed budget for 2015, I made the painful, but necessary - TopicsExpress

In my proposed budget for 2015, I made the painful, but necessary decision to eliminate county funding for Hi Tor Animal Care Center. While I recognize this cut has significance, it amounts to only 10-percent of the shelters total operating budget, as disclosed by Hi Tors Executive Director. We must all do more with less! Its important to note that no other elected official has done more for Hi Tor than me. During my years in the Legislature, I supported the continued conveyance of taxpayer dollars to the shelter as a non-mandated service. Ive taken part in critical fundraising efforts, both as a legislator and as a Clarkstown resident. And, just this summer, I secured a letter of intent with Hi Tor leaders to construct a new shelter in Pomona. The comprehensive management agreement will significantly enhance services and care for dogs and cats that come into the Countys shelter, managed and operated by the nonprofit corporation. As we work to stabilize our fragile finances, we needed to look across the board and make the appropriate cuts. We simply have nowhere else to turn for operating funds. We cannot continue to overtax our residents.
