In my view, International Relations Pillar under Vision 2050 - TopicsExpress

In my view, International Relations Pillar under Vision 2050 should be amended to be called the International Relations and National Security Pillar because International Relations has a security dimension. Understanding that security dimension is important to understanding the West Papua Issue and our common border with Indonesia. Firstly, I see that the PNGDF needs strengthen its political, geo-political and security studies expertise within the field of International Relations. Secondly, it needs to broadened its military doctrine - the PNGDF White Paper and the National Security Policy to reposition the PNGDF to participate in Foreign Affairs and Security Discussions of the 21st Century such as the Nuclear and Non-Proliferation Round of talks, it needs to also consider participation the US military led exercises in the Asia Pacific Region called Cobra Cold 97 held annually in Thailand with participation from throughout the South East Asian Region. Thirdly, the PNGDF needs to focus on rebuilding the maritime element and expanding its responsibilities in the Marine Economic Corridor in PNG. Similarly, the land element comprised of infrantry, engineering and support battlions need to start experimenting with rapid reaction and extraction in any future theatre of military warfare. Fourthly, it needs to have a Inter-Service Military Warfare College - the College of Excellence, which should draw the best and the brightest of new recruits from Goldie River and also from Igram Barraks into this college to develop a shared and mutual understanding of the new military theatre of conflicts in the world today. This should also include a curriculum on the role of the Military in Peace-building and Peace Operations anywhere in the world. In other words, the foundations of the PNGDF need to be rebuilt in order to appreciate the Multi-dimensional and evolving nature of the West Papuan Issue and the our Cross-Border relationship with Indonesia.
