In my view, dolling out instant employment to those who were wounded but still alive and automatic slots to the family of the dead victims of the NIS recruitment stampede is not only a jejune and ineffectual placebo, but a continuation of the same sickening streak of official shallow-mindedness which led to the tragedy in question in the first place. To be candid, I hate the word slot with a passion, i.e. in the context of our overblown unemployment rate and our unending struggle for economic survival in Nigeria. To be sure, slot (a kindred of other nauseous phenomena such as candidate, note from above, etc.) is one of the age-old ingredients of nepotism and corruption in this country, for it invariably discounts merits in favour of connection. If you now award slots to the family of the dead victims of the stampede, what of the rumored slots already given to some high and mighty in the land even before the ill-fated recruitment test was carried out? Therefore, what is so extraordinary about the slots given by the FG to the family of the victims? Honestly, I think this GEJ administration is not only the most incompetent civilian Govt to have ever ruled Nigeria, it is also the most unnatural in its reactions or responses to national emergency situations like this. To my mind, the most natural thing that any govt. that is not sharply standing out of the perpendicular (and therefore still with its grey matter in the correct position) would have done was the immediate suspension of the Minister under whose auspices the so-called NIS recruitment test was conducted, followed by a thorough investigation aimed at fishing out any other culprits in the unfortunate saga. I am convinced that such an action would at least have assuaged the traumatized relatives of the dead victims better than offering them automatic slots for employment in the NIS, as if such a gesture can ever bring back their dead. Anyway, I m still hopeful that one day, Nigeria shall be free.
